What Should You Stock In Your Family’s Medicine Cabinet?

When you have children you have to deal with a whole range of accidents and illnesses. Most of the time they are minor, and can be cured with a few hugs, but occasionally you’ll need to get the first aid kit out or offer an over the counter remedy. That’s why it’s so important to have a medicine cabinet stocked with all the things you need, so you don’t have to dash to the supermarket in the middle of the night to buy supplies. Here are a few things you’ll want to keep stocked in your medicine cabinet.

First aid kit

A properly stocked first aid kit is essential for any house. Remember, whenever you use something it’ll need to be replenished. There’s lots of first aid advice online, so consider taking a course to deal with emergency situations. You can either buy a pre-stocked first aid kit, or make your own with:

  • Different sized plasters
  • Eye dressings
  • Various bandages
  • Safety pins
  • Sterile gloves
  • Tweezers and scissors
  • Cleansing wipes

This will ensure you’re able to deal with most cuts, grazes, and burns, and can take care of injuries while you wait for help to arrive.

  • Creams and sprays

Injuries such as minor burns and stings are common around the home, so make sure you’ve got both antiseptic and antihistamine creams on hand.

  • Painkillers

Make sure you have painkillers that are age appropriate for everyone in the house. For over 12s this would be paracetamol and/or ibuprofen tablets, while for children it could be a junior liquid. The latter is usually used for pain and fever, so have a thermometer on hand to monitor your child’s temperature.

  • Other medication

From cough syrup to prescription medication, it’s handy to have medications on hand to fit your family’s specific needs. It’s always useful with kids in the house to have both nit treatment and worming tablets to hand (you always seem to spot the nits at bedtime, right?). Anti-histamine tablets should always be stocked up if anyone in the house suffers with allergies, and re-hydration sachets are brilliant in case of a sickness bug.

Remember to always read the label carefully, and ask a pharmacist for advice if you’re unsure about a product.

Pin it for later!

Accidents happen when you least expect them, and illnesses can strike quickly, which is why it’s so important to keep your medicine cabinet stocked up. Check it regularly to make sure you have all you need, and look for any medicines that are about to expire. It’s important to have a few basics on hand, as well as any specific medications that your family take, and to keep things stocked up in case of an emergency. By having a stocked medicine cabinet, and a first aid kit for when you travel, you can be prepared for any unpleasant surprises and be equipped to deal with them.

I work, I have four children, I have a dog… ergo, I do not do dusting or ironing. I began LittleStuff back in (gulp) 2004. I like huge mugs of tea. And Coffee. And Cake. And a steaming cone of crispy fresh fluffy chips, smothered in salt and vinegar. #healthyeater When I grow up I am going to be quietly graceful, organised and wear lipstick every day. In the meantime I *may* have a slight butterfly-brain issue.
