And so we’re on to day two of our #BackToSchoolBooks fortnight – is it good round here this week or WHAT?

And today is SUCH a brilliant prize for all the pre-schoolers and early readers. Big Cat Reading Lions were far and away my kids’ favourite reading books at school – sadly it wasn’t the official ‘reading scheme’, but there were always some in the school library for them to choose as their ‘extra’ book of the week. The thing is, they’re not the same prescriptive format as so many schemes – the joy in the Big Cat books is that each book in the series has been created by leading children’s authors and illustrators first. They’re then carefully levelled by educational experts – so you know they’re perfectly targeted to support them whatever their reading level, but they’re also actually interesting and engaging to read!
Big Cat Reading Lions

So today’s prize is the first three levels of the reading lions series – each contains six books, three fiction and three non-fiction (so important. My son was such a slow reader until a teacher stopped thrusting fiction books at him and let him ploigh through non-fiction history books!). Level 1 is for first reading – simple short sentences, with very few tricky words. Level 2 is for the next step, applying their decoding skills on longer sentences with new phonemes, there’s direct speech with more tricky words. And Level 3 supports your child to read with a little adult support; longer, less illustrated texts, with paragraphs, literary language and distinctive characterisation.

The books all works alongside any reading scheme used by your child’s school, and each book features talking points to extend your child’s understanding of the book.

And as if that £75 bundle of books isn’t enough, Collins are also throwing in a seriously comfy beanbag for all those reading hours. Fab, no?

I can’t see a ‘box below’ to enter so thought I’d leave a comment! Please enter me if this is wrong and I am blind! Our little boy is 4 and we are home schooling him so these would come in very handy and we could start using them right away! We have obviously been looking for material for him but its a confusing and expensive business and with another little one due next month we could really do with a hand and it would be one less thing to worry about for a few weeks!

Exactly the same as yourself with my grandson being a reluctant reader not helped by a speech problem but his confidence soars when I find history books about events like The Great Fire of London etc which then lead to chat and creative works. I am always looking to supplement my daughters school reading books with other books from home but unsure til she starts reading them whether they are suitable or not- so this prize would help tremendously. These could then be passed to our youngest who will start school next year.
