We love books – obviously – and we often review latest releases. But I’ve been a parent for nearly twenty years, and I know that the older books sometimes get overlooked by new parents – and they’re missing out on a gem or two of bedtime reading. I think we all know the Very Hungry Caterpillar, of course, but I find newer parents may not know Albert Le Blanc, Little Tiger or Spot. There have been some beautiful picture books that we’d like to re-introduce into your life – I welcome you to the Sunday Picture Book series :)
An absolute classic from Janet & Alan Ahlberg, the team behind so many perfectly beautiful picture books. Whenever we talk about Picture Books, this is one that is a childhood favourite over and over again – and I have to say that “I’ll Have That!’ is still a catchphrase in this house.
Younger toddlers adore the gentle rhyming of Each, Peach, Pear, Plum, of course, but for me the Ahlberg fun really begins with Burglar Bill.
Everything Burglar Bill has is stolen – he eats stole fish and stolen chips for his dinner, and brushes his teeth with a stolen toothbrush. His entire house is filled with stolen things. And then one day while out at work (burgling, obvously), Burglar Bill comes across a baby. He plays with the baby all day, and then naturally he takes the baby home with him…
Gorgeously filled, detailed and gentle artwork, as you’d expect, humur and perfect read-aloud rhythm. What’s not to love?
