How To Upgrade Your Home If You Live In A Rented Property

If you live in a rented home, one of the biggest struggles can often be making it feel like yours. With restrictions placed on things such as decorating, you are often stuck with the decor that is already in place and not know how to make it feel like it’s a space that belongs to you. Luckily, while you are restricted, there are some things you can do that can help to bring your own personal flair to it. In this article we take a look at some top tips that should help you create a home that you love and are proud to be in.

Add artwork to the walls

The first thing you should look at doing to add to your home is put up artwork on your walls. While you might need to ask your landlord if you want to nail and pictures up (often they’re fine with this as long as you fill the holes in when you leave) you can also find more renter friendly options to do, such as command strips. These can hang photos and art work up without causing any damage to the walls themselves. There are many sites offering artwork inspiration such as Pinterest and Instagram.

Invest in high quality furniture

The furniture you have in your home makes a real difference in the vibe it gives off. You might have a place that’s furnished, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also bring in your own items such as a dressing table or wardrobe. If you have something that’s high quality such as solid wood wardrobes, you’re going to want to have these in your space. You could make moodboards to have a look at how well all your items fit in together and make sure it all looks cohesive within the space. Whether you live in a cottage, a contemporary apartment or a classic home, you want to bring it all together.

Focus on your lighting

The lighting of your home is another major area that can completely transform a space. It’s better to invest in your other lighting sources such as table lamps, floor lamps and fairy lights as opposed to the brightness of your ceiling lights. Many rented places don’t have dimmer switches either so if you want to alter the level of your lights, it can be impossible. You could also get some Smart bulbs which can be controlled via an app and can make a light brighter or dimmer depending on your preference and add an atmosphere to the space.

These are just a few things you can do that can help you to upgrade your home when you live in a rented property. Just because the home you live in isn’t technically owned by you, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on making it yours. Whether you’re planning on staying there for a few years or just a few months, there’s no reason not to make it really like yours. A 70's child, I’ve been married for a Very Long Time, and appear to have made four children, and collected one large and useless dog along the way. I work, I have four children, I have a dog… ergo, I do not do dusting or ironing. I began LittleStuff back in (gulp) 2004. I like huge mugs of tea. And Coffee. And Cake. And a steaming cone of crispy fresh fluffy chips, smothered in salt and vinegar. #healthyeater When I grow up I am going to be quietly graceful, organised and wear lipstick every day. In the meantime I *may* have a slight butterfly-brain issue.
