As I grow older I find I have more patience for cocktails. Yes they take a little longer to prepare than another slug of wine… but I’m not a big drinker, and one glass will do me. If I’m only having the one, then I’m happy to make it a special one.
And last night as I curled up in front of the roaring woodburner with the win and the rain lashing at the windows outside I couldn’t imagine a more fitting cocktail than the Flat White Martini I had in my hand – it’s currently one of Selfridges best selling cocktails for a very good reason.
It’s a creamy, contemporary taste, with the warmth of the spirits countered by the coolness of the ice, and it’s saved from being too sweet by a shot of espresso to balance the Baileys Irish Cream. It’s delicious – and far too moreish to be entirely safe. The very best kind of cocktail.
The below recipe makes enough for just one glass – obviously if you’re making for friends you’ll need to multiply the ingredients accordingly.
What you Need:
- 50ml Baileys Original Irish Cream
- 25ml espresso
- 25ml vodka
- Ice Cubes
- Garnish – 3 coffee beans
What You Do:
- Fill a Cocktail Shaker with ice
- Add the Baileys Original Irish cream, vodka and espresso
- Shake until chilled and strain into a martini glass
- Top with coffee beans as garnish
(I don’t currently have a cocktail shaker, mine having met with the floor at high velocity, so I used crushed ice in a jug, added the ingredients and simply stirred briskly. I also didn’t strain mine – I love the ice in the drink)
