Little Stars is the latest Hetty Feather book by best-selling author, Jacqueline Wilson. Just in case you haven’t come across it yet, it’s a fabulous series set in Victorian England, in which a young girl who is abandoned by her mother at the Foundling Hospital as a baby (I know, it sounds like a barrel of laughs, doesn’t it?) and follows her story as she lives in a foster home before returning to the Foundling Hospital as young child, and then on through a series of adventures.
It may not sound much like a kids book series, but this is Jacqueline Wilson we’re talking about. Naturally every book in the series is warm, funny, evocative, honest and just utterly brilliant.
The fifth in the series, Little Stars has Hetty Feather beginning a new chapter; escaping from Tanglefield’s Travelling Circus with her dearest friend Diamond, Hetty is now determined to find them positions as glamorous music hall artistes.
Hetty and Diamond quickly become the Little Stars of Mrs Ruby’s show, alongside many colourful acts – including an old friend from Hetty’s past, Flirty Bertie. But the Cavalcade proves a dangerous place, and Hetty must fight to protect her darling Diamond, who longs for a normal childhood. Meanwhile, Hetty struggles to understand her feelings for Bertie – and for Jem, whom she has never forgotten.
I can’t wait to finish it – this is one of those series that you pinch from your child to read yourself. Plus, if your child IS a fan of Jacqueline Wilson (and they really ought to be) then they should definitely take a look at her website – it’s absolutely brilliant, with loads of cool secrets and little hidden extras. I particularly love exploring The Foundling Hospital – properly absorbing!
